Very simply, this is how it works. Your thoughts trigger your emotions and your emotions determine your experience. Energy follows thought. Don’t take my word for it, try it out. Think happy, positive thoughts and you will feel happy and positive and ready to conquer the world. Think sad, depressing thoughts and it won’t be long before you feel like a wet sock at the bottom of the hamper. And, to take it one step further, your emotions establish your vibration and your vibration is what attracts things to you in life.
A thought always precedes an emotion, although most of the time we’re just not aware of it. The stuff that goes on in our head is random and automatic unless we’re deliberately using our intent which, let’s face it, we don’t do that much. And when you think of how much power these thoughts have, it’s no wonder our lives aren’t always what we want. The good news is you are the one creating your thoughts so you can control what you feel and what you attract.
Well, that’s easier said than done. It’s very hard to keep the awareness needed throughout the day to keep negative thoughts at bay and pull yourself up out of a funk. So what’s a human to do?
On the Toltec path, the first step is The Mastery of Awareness. Only with awareness do you have a choice, so, it’s important to first become aware of the kind of stories you tell yourself all day. They call the constant, chaotic chatting that goes on in your head, the mitote, which means marketplace – the sound of a thousand people talking and no one listening – that babble we all experience. All the voices in your mind are the result of opinions, judgments, jingles, beliefs, sound bytes from the media, etc. Start to listen to what you’re telling yourself all day. Write it down and take an inventory of the stuff in your head.
The beauty of this exercise is not only the awareness to achieve, but who is doing the listening? There is a part of you that’s not involved in all of that, a part that is you, observing, listening, in peace. While you watch your marketplace of mental chatter, you realize that it’s not real, the you that is watching it is!
